This month is National Mediterranean Diet Month (Med Month!) created by Oldways, a world-renowned source of Mediterranean diet information, “to highlight the healthy Mediterranean Diet and its lifestyle practices.” It is based healthy foods “that have traditionally been consumed by people living in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.”

To me, every month is Med Month! As an American Italian-Greek, married to an American-Greek who loves to eat, I’m often found in the kitchen cooking delicious Mediterranean meals and testing recipes for date nights, my blog, my upcoming book and my website (RomancingTheTable.com). I strongly believe in an Oldways’s quote on how the Mediterranean diet affects your love relationships, “You need to eat well to love well.”

Research that began on the Greek island of Crete after World War II proved that the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest in the world. It is often described as the “gold standard for healthy eating” and has been proven to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and increasing brainpower.

Oldways created the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid along with the Harvard School of Public Health. According to the pyramid, we should eat mostly vegetables, legumes, grains, fruits, herbs, spices, and healthy fats such as olive oil on a regular basis. Seafood should be eaten at least twice a week, poultry, diary, and eggs consumed daily to weekly, and red meats and sweets should be on the menu less often. Being physically active and enjoying meals with others is also an important part of the pyramid and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Below are images of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid along with a Vegetarian Diet Pyramid.

I’ve found that delicious and healthy Mediterranean meals with quality time at the table definitely contribute to my happy and healthy marriage. Each week, my husband and I take turns planning our weekly date nights (I’m lucky that he can cook, too!) The person whose week it is makes a Mediterranean dinner and chooses an arts and entertainment activity for the night. We occasionally save up and go out to one of our favorite California-Mediterranean restaurants. The ultimate Mediterranean eating experience was when we were in Greece to produce our #1 NY Times About.com culinary travel DVD - A Greek Islands Destination Cooking Class DVD that took place at a top gourmet Greek restaurant. Back home, when we sit at the table we love recreating a Mediterranean atmosphere with a delicious and healthy Mediterranean Meal. To date, my husband Jim and I have been married for five years and if you count the year of our engagement, we’ve had over one year (365 days) worth of date nights in total. That’s a lot of romantic eating! You can do the same by downloading the Date Night Scheduler HERE.

My Grecian Goddess Greek salad that was inspired by the salad we shared on our first dates causing love at first Mediterranean bite!

For date night this week, we had my Grecian Goddess burgers and a favorite and Grecian Goddess Greek horiatiki (village) salad recipes which my husband and I ate during our courtship. It was love at first Mediterranean bite! You can get also see my recipe here. Below is a video of me cooking up a romantic Mediterranean date night for my Greek God below that will make you smile and want to create your own special Mediterranean evening!

Oldways also has a Mediterranean Foods Alliance, which I enjoy being one of their culinary advisors. We’ve all teamed up to put together a list of vegetable recipes for Med Month. You can find my info and recipe here, the fourth from the bottom. It’s healthy, delicious in our genes and also helps us fit into our jeans! (As I mentioned in my bio, James is an American Greek and I’m an American-Italian Greek home cook.) We are big advocates of eating a Mediterranean Diet, which is simple to prepare and considered to be one of the healthiest in the world.

So, I was delighted to hear the announcement of the new med-mark packaging symbol which will help shoppers quickly identify products that are part of traditional Mediterranean diet. I’m also looking forward to telling my friends who, at their request, I’ve taken to my local Trader Joe’s here in Santa Barbara, California and helped them shop for items for a Mediterranean meal.

According to http://www.mediterraneanmark.org/ the postage sized stamp mark pictured is an amphora, the pottery jug used by Mediterranean culture for over 3,000 years to ship the food to store and ship their food. The med mark will be in stores by the end of the summer 2007.

The Mediterranean Mark is being introduced by Oldways, a widely respected non-profit educational food issues organization that “develops and carries out educational programs and events to help consumers make wise choices about eating, drinking, lifestyle and their traditional pleasures of the table.”

Oldways along with colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health and The World Health Organization, also introduced The Mediterranean Diet Pyramid back in 1993 which has been consistently judged as the gold standard of healthy eating.

The Mediterranean Diet originated from a study on the Greek island of Crete which determined that Cretans and Greeks lived longer than any other population in the world. The research then extended to researching Mediterranean cuisine of Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia and France. Other factors that can influence longevity include exercise, fresh air, and my favorite siestas or naps.

According to the website www.oldwayspt.org the characteristics of the Mediterranean Diet are as follows:
High consumption of olive oil (emphasis on consuming monounsaturated fat)
High consumption of fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals (such as pasta, beans, nuts and seeds).
Moderate consumption of fish and poultry.
Moderate consumption of wine (two to three times a week).
Low consumption of eggs and red meat.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

The authors of the Mediterranean pyramid recommend regular physical exercise, drinking 6 glasses of water a day and moderate consumption of wine. Purple grape juice may offer the same heart health benefits of red wine without the concerns of alcohol. They also recommend that other oils rich in monounsaturated fats, such as canola or peanut oil, can be substituted for olive oil. People watching their weight should limit their oil consumption. For more on the Mediterranean diet visit http://www.oldwayspt.org/

A fabulous resource filled with wonderful essays and 100 recipes of the Oldways philosophy is a new book called The Oldways Table by K. Dun Gifford, Oldways founder and president & Oldways Exec. V.P. Sara Baer-Sinnott. The book also includes descriptions of the traditional Mediterranean, Latin American, Asian, and Vegetarian Diet and a modified Mediterranean Eatwise Pyramid.
